From Waste CO2 to Everyday Products: The Digest’s 2017 Multi-Slide Guide to Liquid Light Technology

by Jim Lane (Biofuels Digest)  We reported this week that Avantium has acquired Liquid Light’s assets and will take the technology forward. Liquid Light developed electrocatalytic technology to make major chemicals from low-cost, globally abundant carbon dioxide.  The company’s technoloigy propelled it to a #1 ranking in the Hot 40 (emerging companies) a few years back.

Liquid Light’s first process was for the production of ethylene glycol (MEG), with a $27 billion annual market, which is used to make a wide range of consumer products such as plastic bottles, antifreeze and polyester clothing. Liquid Light’s technology can be used to produce more than 60 chemicals with large existing markets, including propylene, isopropanol, methyl-methacrylate and acetic acid.

Excerpt from Biofuels Digest:  Our friend hydrogen, where’s that coming from?  “There are three ways to get it,” former LL CEO Teamey once told us, “one which we have unique to Liquid Light. The two most obvious are to use steam reforming or water electrolysis. The less obvious is to strip hydrogen from something else and make two products simultaneously.” Un, explain that again. “For example, our technology can be used to remove hydrogen from propane, thereby converting it to propylene, and then use the hydrogen for CO2 conversion.”  READ MORE
