(Index Box Market Intelligence) CIST Technology, an Indian project developer, intends to supply bio-methanol and green ammonia for bunkering at ports in India and Singapore from a proposed facility in Maharashtra, according to a company statement to ENGINE.
The company is developing an integrated bio-methanol and green ammonia plant in Palghar, a coastal district in western Maharashtra along the Arabian Sea, via its subsidiary Yoki Green Energy. The district is also the planned location for the deepwater Vadhavan port, which received Indian government approval in 2024.
The Palghar site will combine biomass gasification and electrolysis to produce 200,000 metric tons per year of bio-methanol and 100,000 metric tons per year of green ammonia, CIST co-founder Suyash Agrawal told ENGINE. Onsite integration will include green hydrogen production and biogenic CO₂ capture, while renewable electricity will be sourced from a local provider. Agrawal stated that the entire output of bio-methanol and green ammonia is designated for use as marine fuel.
The Maharashtra government has committed 40 billion Indian rupees (approximately $414 million) to the project. CIST is aiming for a final investment decision by the end of this year. Initial bio-methanol capacity of 50,000 metric tons per year is expected to begin operations by 2028, with the facility scheduled to reach full production by the end of 2029. Co-founder Chirag Rawat explained that CIST is working to supply both bunker suppliers and shipping companies.
Under the proposed model, CIST will deliver the fuels to bunker suppliers, who will then perform the bunkering. For shipping companies, CIST is discussing fuel supplies on a free on board or cost, insurance, and freight basis to Indian ports or Singapore.
