Advanced Biofuels USA Starts “Just A Minute” Educational Series
(Advanced Biofuels USA) The first episode of “Just A Minute or So about Renewable Fuels” focuses on what might be used to make renewable fuels. Students, teachers, or anyone interested in renewable fuels can see in a 3-minute slide presentation narrated by Advanced Biofuels USA’s Joanne Ivancic with pictures of dozens of “feedstocks” used to make renewable fuels or potential feedstocks being researched for that purpose.
The presentation ends with an at-home learning suggestion. In this episode, it’s to learn, on a small scale, what farmers need to think about on a large scale, no matter what the purpose of their crop might be.
“This first episode is a test drive to see if there is interest in this type of information and format,” said Ivancic. “If this is well-received, we are thinking of publishing a new episode weekly to introduce information about different aspects of renewable fuels, just a minute or so of interesting information. Future topics could include overviews of conversion technologies, different types of renewable fuels, focus on specific kinds of feedstock, explanation of octane, retrofitting for E85, links to resources for at-home experiments to demonstrate how ethanol or biodiesel are made, how to tell if you have a flex-fuel vehicle, and more. We chose to highlight the range of feedstocks for our first episode because during in-person lectures, that always attracts intense interest. We welcome suggestions about topics and format.”
The text of the narration is available to download . It includes links to further information about each feedstock.
Three questions you will be able to answer after watching Episode 1:
- Name 5 things, other than corn, that can be used to make renewable transportation fuel.
- If you are making ethanol for fuel in Asia, what kind of feedstock might you use?
- What do you think of when you hear the word “biofuel”? Is your answer different after watching Episode 1 than it was before? What’s the difference, if any?
