(The Nippon Foundation) The Nippon Foundation has been promoting the development of zero-CO2 emission vessels as part of its "Zero-Emission Ship Project, which aims to decarbonize domestic shipping since 2022. Recently, the "Kikomaru" (gross tonnage approximately 4,500 tons), developed by the "Marine Hydrogen 4-Stroke Engine/Hydrogen Engine Compatible Large Domestic Tanker Development Consortium (Representative: Yanmar Power Solutions Co., Ltd.)," one of the three consortia comprising this project, as the world's first *1 vessel equipped with a hydrogen-fired engine *2 , sailed approximately 33 km for about two hours using its hydrogen-fired engine as a carbon-neutral demonstration voyage in Osaka Bay on September 25, 2026. The development and demonstration voyage of a vessel equipped with a hydrogen-fired engine is a world first, representing a significant step towards carbon neutrality in the domestic shipping sector by 2050.

In the "Consortium for the Development of Marine Hydrogen 4-Stroke Engines and Large Domestic Tankers Compatible with Hydrogen Engines," Yanmar Power Solutions Co., Ltd. was responsible for the development of hydrogen-related equipment, including hydrogen-fired engines, while Ueno TransTech Co., Ltd., the owner and operator of the Terumitsu Maru, was responsible for the ship's retrofit and crew training to adapt to hydrogen fuel. This demonstration voyage achieved a reduction of approximately 1.2 tons of CO2 emissions compared to using conventional fossil fuels . The Foundation will continue to aim for the decarbonization of domestic shipping and, ultimately, the strengthening of the competitiveness of Japan's shipbuilding and maritime industries through the development of zero-emission vessels.
- *1. According to the Nippon Foundation (as of September 2026)
- *2. Pilot ignition system is adopted.
Comments from those involved
Mitsuyuki Unno (Managing Director, The Nippon Foundation)
In this project, the successful achievement of carbon-neutral navigation by the "Kiko Maru," the world's first vessel equipped with a hydrogen-fired engine, is a significant step in opening up the possibilities of hydrogen fuel in domestic shipping. We hope that the technology established in this initiative will become widely adopted and that the introduction of hydrogen-fueled vessels in domestic shipping will accelerate further. The Nippon Foundation will continue to contribute to the decarbonization of domestic shipping and the strengthening of the competitiveness of the maritime industry through this project.
Takashi Ueno (Chairman and CEO, Ueno TransTech Co., Ltd.)
Since its founding in 1869, Ueno TransTech has been involved in energy transportation with the mission of "safely transporting energy." This time, as shipowner and operator, we undertook a hydrogen fuel demonstration voyage with the Terumitsu Maru, and were able to gain valuable experience and knowledge. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Nippon Foundation, Yanmar Power Solutions, and all other parties involved for their support. Moving forward, we will continue to work on the possibilities of new energy sources while valuing safety and trust.
Masaru Hirose (President and CEO, Yanmar Power Solutions Co., Ltd.)
We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Nippon Foundation and Ueno TransTech for granting us this valuable opportunity to conduct a maritime demonstration test utilizing a container system, in addition to developing a high-speed hydrogen engine. We believe that the success of zero-emission operation on an actual domestic vessel is a major step forward in opening up new avenues for fuel and energy use at sea. Based on the technologies we have cultivated so far, we will continue to challenge ourselves to further expand the possibilities of hydrogen fuel and realize engines that will support next-generation maritime transport.
Kazuma Kashiwagi (Director of the Environmental Bureau, Kobe City)
This demonstration represents a significant step towards the practical application of hydrogen-fueled zero-emission ships and is expected to contribute to the promotion of decarbonization in Japan's shipping sector. Kobe City intends to continue contributing to the development of hydrogen-related technologies by providing demonstration fields and other means, and we have high hopes that this demonstration will lead to the implementation of new demonstrations in Kobe City and further boost the momentum for hydrogen-related technology development in Japan.
Nippon Foundation Zero-Emission Ship Project: Developing future ships with zero greenhouse gas emissions.
This initiative, established by three consortia, aims to realize hydrogen-fueled ships (zero-emission vessels) ahead of the world, in order to achieve carbon neutrality in the domestic shipping sector by 2050. In April 2024, the offshore wind turbine work vessel "HANARIA," which uses hydrogen fuel cells, was successfully operated with zero emissions, and by the end of fiscal year 2026, demonstration experiments are planned in collaboration with the other two consortia. The development of zero-emission vessels will not only strongly promote the realization of carbon neutrality, which is an urgent issue worldwide, but is also expected to be a "future industry" that can utilize Japan's world-class hydrogen technology and engine technology.
