Uniper and Arcadia eFuels Sign Long-Term Agreement to Accelerate Aviation Decarbonization

Europe's aviation industry will require large volumes of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the coming decades to meet increasingly ambitious climate targets. Yet supply remains scarce. Against this backdrop, Uniper and Arcadia eFuels have signed one of Europe's largest announced sustainable aviation fuel produced from renewable energy (eSAF) offtake agreements to date, supporting the development of new production capacity and helping establish a European market for sustainable aviation fuels.

The agreement was signed in Düsseldorf, Germany, in the presence of Mona Neubaur, Minister for Economic Affairs, Industry, Climate Action and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and Deputy Minister-President, Anette Galskjøt, Consul General of the Kingdom of Denmark in Hamburg, Germany.

Aviation is one of the hardest sectors to decarbonize, and liquid fuels will remain essential for decades. The key challenge now is to move sustainable aviation fuels from promising projects to industrial scale. This agreement brings long-term demand and new supply together, helping to create the conditions for a competitive European eSAF market. For Uniper, it is also an important step in building a strong position in a market with significant growth potential.

Under the agreement, Uniper has agreed to offtake 40,000 metric tons of eSAF annually from Arcadia’s Project Endor at Vordingborg, Denmark. The agreement is legally binding, while the commencement of deliveries remains subject to agreed conditions precedent and the eSAF facility commencing commercial operations. Current planning foresees supply from the early 2030s onwards.

The contracted volume is equivalent to the fuel required for approximately 1,000 Boeing 787-9 flights between Düsseldorf and Abu Dhabi each year. The agreement marks a major commercial milestone for Arcadia eFuels, a leading developer and producer of Power-to-Liquid sustainable aviation fuel (eSAF), providing the certainty required to accelerate construction and commissioning of its flagship Project Endor in Vordingborg, Denmark.

For Uniper, the agreement represents an early strategic position in a market expected to grow rapidly over the coming decades. Sustainable aviation fuels are widely regarded as one of the few scalable pathways to reducing emissions from long-haul aviation. By securing access to Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO)-compliant eSAF, Uniper is strengthening its role in a new European growth market while expanding its portfolio of low-carbon energy products.

Arcadia eFuels’ eSAF is produced using renewable electricity, self-produced green hydrogen, and captured CO₂. Compared with conventional jet fuel, the fuel can achieve up to 98% lower lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions and is compatible with key sustainable aviation fuel frameworks, including the EU ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation.
