(Port of Rotterdam) In partnership, Power2X and Advario are developing a world-scale production and storage hub for sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF) and synthetic, ultra-low carbon fuels in the port of Rotterdam. -- The Power2X production facility will have the capacity to produce over 250,000 tonnes/year of e-SAF, a non-fossil, synthetic fuel made from green hydrogen. It will be the largest e-SAF facility announced to-date, making sufficient ultra-low carbon fuel to fully power approximately 7,000 flights between Amsterdam and New York annually.
The facility will use imported green methanol produced from green hydrogen and biogenic carbon as feedstock as well as locally produced green hydrogen. Green methanol will be imported from locations where renewable energy and green hydrogen are abundant.
Advario will develop an advanced storage and logistics facility with a capacity of ca. 230,000 cubic meters, supported by marine and rail facilities, to ensure a stable supply chain for the green molecules.
The strategic location in the port of Rotterdam offers direct access to European airports, including Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, making it a key hub for the distribution of sustainable aviation fuels and e-fuels.
Developing the next generation energy hub
Advario acquired the 26-hectare former Aluchemie site in Rotterdam in April 2023 and has since been working with Power2X to transform it into a hub for new energy solutions. With its waterfront access and proximity to the key hydrogen pipeline, the site is positioned as a prime location for the development of sustainable energy within one of Europe’s major energy and chemical hubs. Power2X and Advario are committed to creating future proof solutions and supporting green innovation and broader European decarbonization goals.
Sustainable Aviation Fuel is critical to reducing CO2 emissions, cutting lifecycle carbon emissions by 90% compared to conventional jet fuel. Europe’s ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation mandates the increased use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), including e-SAF from 2030 onwards. The hub will contribute 40% of the required e-SAF volume when it starts up around the turn of the decade, making it a crucial player in Europe’s energy transition.

ROTTERDAM, Amsterdam, December 17, 2024 -- Power2X has announced a strategic collaboration with Honeywell (NASDAQ: HON) to implement Honeywell UOP’s eFiningTM methanol-to-jet processing technology in Power2X’s eFuels Rotterdam project -- a large-scale production and storage hub for sustainable aviation fuel (eSAF) and synthetic, ultra-low carbon fuels in the Port of Rotterdam.
The Rotterdam facility will use locally produced green hydrogen and imported methanol produced from green hydrogen and biogenic carbon as feedstock to create electrofuels (eFuels). These eFuels are a class of synthetic fuels that can help displace a portion of fossil fuels.
eFuels combine green hydrogen (i.e., hydrogen produced from renewable energy and water) and carbon dioxide to create eMethanol, which can then be converted into sustainable fuels like eSAF or other synthetic drop-in fuels. The project underscores how technology is shaping the future of aviation and the energy transition, two megatrends that align with Honeywell’s portfolio.

The Power2X production facility will have the capacity to produce more than 250,000 tonnes per year of eSAF, a non-fossil, synthetic fuel made from green hydrogen. Honeywell’s eFining technology will play a central role in production, enabling the conversion of methanol into eFuels with low emissions and high efficiency.

Honeywell UOP eFining can reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 88% compared to conventional jet fuel.1 When blended with conventional jet fuel, eSAF is a drop-in replacement fuel that requires no changes to aircraft technology or fuel infrastructure.
Europe’s ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation has already mandated the increased use of SAF, including eSAF, from 2030 onwards. In alignment with this mandate, Power 2X’s facility is a crucial player in Europe’s energy transition as it has the potential to supply 40% of the required eSAF volume when it enters operation around the turn of the decade.
Honeywell's SAF technologies are licensed at over 50 sites globally, with a projected daily capacity of over 500,000 barrels of renewable fuel per day when fully operational.2 Honeywell's renewable fuels portfolio also includes its EcofiningTM, FT UnicrackingTM and Ethanol to Jet technologies to help create next-generation fuels.
