NC Utilities Commission Approves Catawba Biogas for Pilot Program
by Erin Voegele (Biomass Magazine) The North Carolina Utilities Commission has approved the participation of Catawba Biogas LLC, a proposed poultry-waste biogas plant in Anson County, in a pilot program that will allow the facility to inject renewable natural gas (RNG) to pipelines operated by Piedmont Natural Gas, a subsidiary of Duke Energy Corp.
On Feb. 4, the N.C. Utilities Commission published an order approving Catawba for participation in the pilot program, subject to the company and Piedmont entering into a interconnect agreement approved by the commission.
The Anson Economic Development Partnership announced the proposed Catawba Biogas project in May 2018. At that time, the AnsonEDP said the company plans to invest approximately $15 million in state-of-the-art biogas technology.
Information released by the N.C. Utilities Commission indicates the Catawba Biogas plant to produce RNG from via an anaerobic digestion process using 100 percent poultry litter collected from more than 250 boiler chicken houses. Catawba plans to sell a portion of the RNG it produces and its environmental credits to Duke Energy Carolinas LLC. READ MORE
