The financing supports the launch of PIVOT™, Lydian’s full-stack production platform that enables developers to build and operate synthetic fuel facilities at dramatically lower cost than conventional approaches and gives customers a direct path to buy fuel from Lydian’s own projects. PIVOT reduces plant capital costs by more than 50% compared to competing technologies, can deliver up to 95% lifecycle emissions reductions, and creates a commercially viable pathway for synthetic fuels to compete with biofuels on price within this decade.
The investment also marks the first announced deployment from Breakthrough Energy Ventures’ oneworld BEV Fund, a strategic investment fund supported by leading global airlines and other members of the aviation industry to address the limited availability and high cost of today’s sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The fund seeks to accelerate the global development of long-term aviation fuel solutions that are cost-effective, scalable, and have lower emissions than conventional fuels.

Excerpt from CityBiz: Bill Gates-founded Breakthrough Energy Ventures has made the first investment from its dedicated aviation fund, leading a $43 million Series A financing for Boston-based startup Lydian, which is developing a lower-carbon jet fuel made from hydrogen and carbon dioxide.
The investment comes from the $150 million oneworld BEV Fund, launched in 2025 with backing from American Airlines Group, Alaska Air Group and several other airlines to accelerate commercialization of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
Lydian is developing an electrofuel, or e-SAF, production process that the company says can cut capital costs by more than 50% compared with competing technologies. Reducing production costs is widely viewed as one of the biggest hurdles to making sustainable aviation fuel economically competitive with conventional jet fuel.
“There’s so much money that has gone into things that haven’t panned out,” said Eric Toone, managing partner at Breakthrough Energy Ventures. He said Lydian’s technology offers meaningful cost and scalability advantages that could eventually allow it to compete with both bio-based SAF and conventional fossil-derived jet fuel.

Lydian CEO and co-founder Joe Rodden, formerly of Form Energy, said the company’s technology is designed to manufacture fuel when renewable electricity from wind and solar is at its lowest cost. The company is building smaller, modular reactors with more efficient catalysts that can operate economically even when running intermittently.
Rodden said Lydian’s reactors are roughly one-tenth the size of conventional gas-to-liquids SAF facilities and approximately one-hundredth the size of older gas-fired systems, significantly reducing construction costs.
The company currently operates a pilot-scale facility in Boston and plans to complete a commercial demonstration plant in East Texas in 2028 at an estimated cost of $30 million. A full-scale commercial facility is targeted for 2030 and is expected to cost approximately $200 million. READ MORE

The platform combines Lydian's proprietary reactor technologies, catalysts, process design, software, and balance-of-plant into standardized, factory-built modules that reduce project complexity while improving economics.
The result is a turnkey platform that:
- Cuts project development timelines by up to two years through pre-engineered modules.
- Operates flexibly alongside intermittent renewable power, significantly lowering electricity costs.

Lydian is already operating a tonne-scale pilot plant at its Boston-based R&D Center of Excellence. The company is advancing a commercial demonstration facility targeted for operation in 2028, with its first full-scale commercial deployment expected in 2030.
