by Jim Lane (Biofuels Digest) ... (W)hat are we eventually going to put in the tanks of these massive long-haul machines? It is a gigantic question involving gigantic aircraft, refineries, capital requirements, and energy loads—and aviation remains among the hardest sectors on Earth to decarbonize precisely because an airliner cannot casually trade the extraordinary energy density of liquid hydrocarbons for tonnes of batteries without surrendering the payload economics that make commercial flight possible.
Curiously, India’s answer to that massive technological question becomes vastly easier to understand at the other end of this short flight, standing beside one of the least pretentious automobiles imaginable: a Maruti Suzuki WagonR. While the ubiquitous little hatchback has been a fixture of Indian roads for years, the specific unit parked in Pune is different. Operating as a flex-fuel vehicle in the Praj Industries fleet, it represents—for founder chairman Dr. Pramod Chaudhari, who has championed ethanol transportation for more than three decades—something approaching a victory lap on four very modest wheels. Praj calls it “a milestone on wheels,” yet inside that little car hides a much larger structural story. In the prosperous West, the energy transition is frequently discussed as a theoretical contest among competing technology vectors: batteries or hydrogen, ethanol or electricity, SAF or e-fuels. But for a family climbing the economic ladder in an emerging economy, energy is considerably less abstract. It is the immediate cost of commuting to work, the freight expense embedded in delivered food, and the vulnerability of a household budget to the price of a barrel of crude set thousands of miles away by events that family cannot control. Decarbonization is important, but resilience is personal.

Although India reached its E20 ethanol blending targets well ahead of schedule, E20 increasingly looks less like a final finish line than an industrial training ground. Delivering the Ethanol Blending Programme required far more than simply distilling alcohol; it demanded that agricultural supply chains, farmers, fermentation experts, process engineers, private capital, technical standards, fuel distributors, automakers, and government policy align and move together at enormous scale. And when a country spends years assembling those disparate pieces, something fundamental occurs: it acquires deep industrial capability.
Dr. Chaudhari makes this larger purpose explicit in the latest edition of Praj’s Future Perfect (Volume 4) report, writing that India’s clean energy push was never conceived merely as an emission-reduction effort, but as a deliberate engine to curb imported fossil fuels, empower rural farming communities, and cultivate indigenous technology. Having demonstrated what coordinated policy, process technology, and industrial execution could accomplish with liquid ethanol, India is leveraging its momentum under the national BioE3 Policy to move far beyond blending targets into sustainable aviation fuel, renewable chemicals, compressed biogas, and next-generation biomanufacturing. India thought it was merely building a domestic ethanol industry, but it was actually building a sovereign bioeconomy.

India consumed approximately 94.7 million tonnes of diesel in FY 2025–26, according to PPAC data cited by Praj, driven by heavy payload cycles and severe off-grid infrastructure constraints where battery-electric power remains impractical.

Praj has spent more than a decade developing Bio-Isobutanol (Bio-IBA). The molecule’s attractions are decidedly practical: higher caloric energy density approaching conventional fuels, favorable blending characteristics, and direct low-solubility compatibility with existing engines and fuel distribution infrastructure. Extensive testing has validated its performance in heavy logistics, but Bio-IBA contains another strategic surprise: its versatile chemistry carries it beyond heavy road transport into sustainable aviation fuels, renewable chemicals, and advanced bio-based materials. Which brings us straight back to that airliner on the runway in Delhi—proving that the little WagonR and the commercial jet are not opposite ends of the energy transition, but interconnected points along the exact same molecular frontier.

The newly inaugurated Precision Fermentation Laboratory extends the company’s capabilities into custom-engineered microorganisms capable of producing high-value functional ingredients, specialty biopolymers, proteins, and chemical building blocks. Unveiled at IBET 2026 under the umbrella framework of the Praj BioVerse™, this unified ecosystem integrates 1G and 2G ethanol, compressed biogas (CBG), Bio-IBA, SAF, bioplastics, and co-product valorization into a single circular platform.
To feed this growing biomanufacturing engine with human capital, the Dr. Pramod Chaudhari Centre of Excellence for Advanced Bioeconomy was inaugurated at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) on August 10, 2026, fostering academic research and hands-on industrial learning. The underlying economic thesis has fundamentally changed: biological feedstocks are no longer treated merely as raw material to ferment into fuel gallons, but as rich organic inputs from which biology and process engineering can extract the highest-value combination of molecules, materials, energy, and co-products. Yield is good, but total resource valorization is better.

In Paraguay, Praj transformed Alcogreen S.A.’s idle 200-cubic-meter-per-day molasses facility into a modern corn ethanol biorefinery producing 520 m3/day—demonstrating how brownfield assets can be optimized with high capital efficiency. In Mazabuka, Zambia, Southern Bio Energy Limited (SBEL) deployed Praj’s HiFerm® fermentation and EcoFine® distillation technologies alongside beverage-grade CO2 recovery. Operating above its design capacity while supplying beverage giants like Diageo, Heineken, AB InBev, Coca-Cola, and PepsiCo, SBEL’s Extra Neutral Alcohol earned the 2026 Monde Selection Gold Quality Award, with CEO Divya Reddy Shah emphasizing that Indian tech enabled sensory and purity parity with the world’s most elite distillers. Meanwhile in California, Praj showcased its Mechanical Vapor Recompression (MVR) integration at Aemetis Keyes’ 65-million-gallon-per-year facility, drastically reducing natural gas consumption and Carbon Intensity (CI).

Genuine self-reliance does not mean economic isolation or autarky. It means growing what you can grow, utilizing waste streams you already possess, developing technologies tailored to your local resources, reducing vulnerability to commodities whose prices you cannot control, and then exporting that hard-won knowledge to anyone who needs it.
