Bunker One Wants to Supply Marine Fuel with 7% Biodiesel
(EPBR) Initiative, unprecedented in Brazil, will feature laboratory and vessel tests — A partnership between the Danish multinational Bunker One and the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) will study the feasibility of adding 7% biodiesel to marine diesel oil.
The expectation is that the results are ready within eight months.
According to the company, a global supplier of fuels ( bunker oil ) and lubricants for navigation, the objective is to take advantage of the Brazilian experience in the production of biodiesel – the country is the second largest producer of biofuel in the world.
In the long term, Bunker One hopes to position itself as a global supplier of marine fuel with biodiesel.

In addition to collaborating with the sustainable growth of navigation in the region, the program also seeks to create an alternative for the biodiesel industry, impacted by the reduction in the amount of biodiesel in the mixture with diesel for road use .

Tests will evaluate storage and performance
Field research will take place on the company’s tugboats operating in Rio de Janeiro. The other studies will be carried out at the Laboratory of Environmental Analysis, Primary Processing and Biofuels at UFRN.
The work, carried out by seven university researchers, will evaluate the mixtures during storage and application to identify technological bottlenecks and point out ways to make the use of biodiesel in the sector viable.

A Boston Consulting Group (BCG) survey of 125 companies that depend on shipping showed that 71% would pay more for carbon neutral freight , while 67% are less inclined to switch suppliers if it is carbon neutral.
On average, customers say they would pay 2% more for sustainable freight.

BCG calculates that the rate would have to increase by 10% to 15% to finance the transition from shipping to net zero by 2050 — the industry needs $2.4 trillion in investments to zero its emissions and reach the main goal of the Paris Agreement. READ MORE
