In “After the Fall: Rebuilding US Liquid Fuel Production – Invest in Our Land or the Shale Oil Fields?” Kozak, Advanced Biofuels USA’s fuels/engines and policy expert, reviews recent experts’ predictions about the trajectory of oil prices, analyses how they went wrong and the current situation of debt and decline in the US shale oil/gas industry.

He sets out options for the future and explores the practical aspects of what it will take to re-establish domestic resources of transportation energy.  Do we bail out the banks and financial institutions that bet on the fossil fuel sector and lost; or do we take this opportunity to replace dirty, polluting, high GHG fuels with clean, renewable sustainable ones?

Starting with Pope Frances’ exhortation to develop “more diver­sified and innovative forms of production which impact less on the environment” Kozak proceeds to find the renewable option better for three reasons:

1) Flexibility due to the potential to repurpose renewable resources to better manage market fluxuations;
2) Less vulnerability to low-cost producers who dominate the world fossil fuels markets;  and
3) The relative performance of the shale oil and renewable transportation fuels industries in 2015.

Kozak concludes that if the American renewable transportation fuels industry can succeed while the US shale oil industry is collapsing, it seems that the way forward to American liquid fuel independence and lower GHGs is through the land of America – biofuels and not shale oil.

Kozak brings a fresh view to the national and international discussion of this crucial element of public policy and private investment.
