Valenciaport Awards the Concession for a Renewable Fuel Plant in Sagunto

Valencia, May 20, 2026 – The Board of Directors of the Port Authority of Valencia (APV) has approved an administrative concession for the construction and operation of a plant for the processing and production of renewable fuels for loading and unloading at the Port of Sagunto.

The concession, awarded to FIVE NEXT USEOIL SOLUTIONS, SL – UCO TRADING SPAIN, SL, will have a term of 25 years and will involve an investment of 20 million euros for the construction and commissioning of the project, which will occupy an area of 27,800 square meters at South Pier 2 of the Port of Sagunto.

The project involves the collection, storage, preparation, treatment, and subsequent processing of waste fats, such as used cooking oil and animal fats. This processing will result in advanced biofuels produced through a biomass conversion process.

The APV Board of Directors also approved today two separate requests to provide commercial services for the supply of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) to ships via tankers in the ports of Valencia, Sagunto, and Gandia.

The two concessions are valid for six years and have been awarded to SHELL WESTERN LNG BV and AXPO IBERIA, SL, in addition to the licence previously awarded to PENINSULA PETROLEUM. The commitment to alternative energy sources is one of the key elements of Valenciaport’s Net Zero Emissions Plan, through which the organization aims to lead the decarbonization of the ports of Valencia, Sagunto, and Gandia.

Among other matters, the Board of Directors has also agreed to grant TERMINAL MARÍTIMA DE GRANELES DE SAGUNTO, SL a license to provide services for the loading, stowage, unloading, and transshipment of goods at the multipurpose terminal in the Port of Sagunto. The license will be valid for a period of six years.

At today’s meeting, CSP LOGITREN SA was authorized to provide commercial rail switching services and any other services related to train operations for a period of three years at the ports of Valencia and Sagunto.

As for rail transport, the Council has been informed that one of the most notable indicators in the traffic data for April and for the first four months of the year is the growth in rail traffic. Between January and April, Valenciaport handled 1,285,476 tons by rail, a 20.42% increase over the same period in 2025.

In terms of container volume, rail traffic reached 97,155 TEUs, an increase of 21.69%. The year-over-year trend also remains positive, with growth exceeding 16% for both tonnage and TEUs.

The Council received a report on rail traffic trends at the Port of Valencia during the first four months of the year. Between January and April, Valenciaport handled 1,285,476 tons by rail, representing a 20.42% increase compared to the same period in 2025.

Container volume by rail reached 97,155 TEUs, representing a 21.69% increase. Year-over-year, rail traffic continues to grow by more than 16% in both tonnage and TEUs.

In terms of total cargo volume, during the month of April, the terminals at the Valenciaport port facilities handled 6,855,146 tons of cargo, a 4.38% decrease compared to the same month in 2025.

In containerized traffic, 500,604 TEUs were handled during the same month, representing a 2.57% decrease compared to the same month of the previous year.

In the first four months of the year, Valenciaport handled 25.5 million tons, down 3.60% from the same period in 2025, while container traffic reached 1,813,446 TEUs, an increase of 0.27%.

Year-over-year, the Port Authority of Valencia (APV) handled over 79.1 million tons, down 2.28%, and over 5.6 million TEUs, up 1.62%.

China remains Valenciaport’s leading trading partner in terms of both tonnage and container traffic. So far this year, trade with China has exceeded 3.3 million tons, a 23.78% increase over the same period in 2025. In TEUs, traffic reached 308,206 units, an increase of 25.25%.

The United States remains one of the markets with the highest volume of trade. Trade with this country reached 109,880 TEUs, representing a 13.65% decline. In terms of tonnage, trade totalled 2.1 million tons, an increase of 7.63%. The sharpest declines in container traffic were recorded in the United Arab Emirates (-38.95%), Saudi Arabia (-29.44%), Italy (-24.08%), Turkey (-21.70%), and India (-18.29%). READ MORE
