Italy: Veneto Transit Operator Adds New IVECO Buses Fueled by BioCNG
(Arriva Italia/NGV Journal) On 27 April, Arriva Veneto presented seven new biomethane-powered buses at Campo Cannoni in Sottomarina. The zero-impact vehicles will soon enter service in the suburban fleet and will connect Chioggia with Venice, Mestre and the Marco Polo airport.
The new IVECO Crossway Line 12-meter buses were financed at 90% by the Veneto Region and the rest by Arriva Veneto; these are the first vehicles in the region to perform extra-urban services and be equipped with renewable natural gas.
The presentation event was attended by the mayor of Chioggia Mauro Armelao, as well as some classes of the Valli di Chioggia Middle School, about 30 students who, due to the preparation of an entire bus with educational material, learned what biomethane is and what makes it green and sustainable compared to other types of fuel.
Biomethane – both compressed and liquefied – allows an overall reduction in CO2 emissions that can range from 80% up to 180% compared to traditional fuels. Therefore, it allows not only to cancel CO2 emissions, but also to intercept methane gas before its dispersion into the atmosphere and, therefore, to effectively reduce the greenhouse effect.
