Hitting Canada’s Climate Targets with Biogas & RNG
(Canadian Biogas Association) Biogas & Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) is a proven climate solution, with 279 projects across Canada already preventing more than 8 Mt of greenhouse gas emissions from reaching the atmosphere every year.
But how much greater a role can biogas & RNG play in hitting Canada’s 2030 and 2050 climate targets?
Our new report, “Hitting Canada’s Climate Targets with Biogas & RNG”, finds that biogas & RNG can deliver big GHG reductions: 26.7 Mt by 2030, 40.2 Mt by 2050, and delivering 55% of Canada’s methane pledge.
Current federal government policies only capture a small fraction of biogas & RNG’s potential. But a combination of two policies already proving successful at the provincial level could help biogas & RNG deliver much bigger GHG reductions. They are:
- A renewable gas mandate, similar to what Québec and British Columbia have in place
- A carbon offsets system that rewards landfills and farms for voluntarily collecting and utilizing methane, like Alberta and Québec have in place
