Green Shipping Corridor +3, the World's Largest Port Signed an Agreement with Three Major Hub Ports in Europe

(Xinde Maritime Green Shipping/Xinde Maritime News) Ningbo-Zhoushan Port and three major European hub ports signed a green shipping corridor construction agreement -- Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the EU, at the opening ceremony and main forum of the 2025 Maritime Silk Road Port Cooperation Forum held on May 27, Ningbo-Zhoushan Port signed green shipping corridor construction agreements with the three major European hub ports, Hamburg Port, Wilhelmshaven Port, Germany, and Valencia Port, Spain, respectively, planning to build three green shipping corridors to promote the deepening of low-carbon cooperation between China and European ports and inject strong green momentum into the continuation of the "economic symbiosis relationship" between China and the EU. So far, Ningbo-Zhoushan Port has become the hub port with the largest number of green shipping corridors under construction in China.

At present, global climate governance is accelerating and deepening, and the international shipping industry, which accounts for about 80% of the world's international trade, is facing urgent challenges in emission reduction. As an innovative decarbonization mechanism, the Green Shipping Corridor came into being, focusing on shipping emission reduction, and promoting zero-carbon technology, clean fuels and intelligent management on specific routes through the collaboration of ports, shipping companies and governments.

According to the agreement, Ningbo-Zhoushan Port will connect with the Port of Hamburg and Wilhelmshaven in Germany and the Port of Valencia in Spain respectively, and will work with shipping companies, cargo owners, energy suppliers, think tanks and other stakeholders to carry out joint actions on the construction and use of shore power, optimization of collection and distribution structure, application of renewable energy, and clean fuel refueling. This will promote the construction of a green shipping corridor from one port terminal gate to another between the agreed container terminals along the liner routes set up by shipping companies with conditions and willingness, promote net zero emissions in maritime transportation between the two ports, and jointly accelerate the decarbonization of the shipping industry.

It is reported that Zhejiang Seaport Group and Ningbo Zhoushan Port Group (hereinafter referred to as the "Group") have previously signed a memorandum of understanding or cooperation agreement with the Port of Hamburg, Port of Wilhelmshaven in Germany and the Port of Valencia in Spain, and had full exchanges at the Friendly Port Salon with the theme of "Global Cooperation on Green Shipping Corridors", laying a solid foundation for the joint construction of the green shipping corridor.

The Port of Hamburg is the largest port in Germany and an important node along the Belt and Road. It has been actively implementing a clean energy application strategy and has a certified carbon-neutral terminal. Wilhelmshaven implements a green transformation strategy with hydrogen energy as the core, combining multimodal transport, international cooperation and technological innovation to further promote energy transformation and sustainable development of ports. The Port of Valencia is an important hub in the Mediterranean region. In recent years, it has implemented a number of innovative green port construction measures and plans to further expand the proportion of renewable energy use by 2030 and ultimately achieve the goal of zero emissions.

The green strategic layout of the above three ports coincides with the low-carbon development path of Ningbo-Zhoushan Port. As one of the leaders in the construction of domestic green shipping corridors, Ningbo-Zhoushan Port has implemented the "dual carbon strategy" in depth in recent years, and has increased the research and development and promotion of green and low-carbon technologies. It has not only completed the national key research and development plan project "Water Transport Port-Ship Multi-Energy Fusion Technology and Integrated Application", landed the first "Green Electric Terminal" in Zhejiang, but also put into use the first domestic LNG diesel dual-fuel tugboat and oil-electric parallel hybrid full-rotation tugboat and other environmentally friendly equipment, and the port area has a leading scale of new energy container trucks and mobile machinery. At present, the Ningbo-Zhoushan Port area has achieved full shore power coverage of terminal berths (except liquid chemical berths), and the annual shore power usage exceeds 20 million kWh. READ MORE
