Fowl Fuel? Scientists Have Developed a Process for Converting Chicken Feather Meal into Biodiesel Fuel
(NACS Online) Is biofuel development going to the birds? Scientists at the University of Nevada, Reno, have found a way to convert chicken feather meal into biodiesel fuel, Alternative Energy reports.
The team, lead by professor Manoranjan “Mano” Misra, found that chicken feathers usually are combined with blood and innards to create chicken feather feed, which is used as a fertilizer or low-grade animal feed. However, chicken feather meal also has a 12 percent fat content, which the researchers discovered could be boiled in water to extract the fat for making into biodiesel fuel. READ MORE
