Experts on the Outside Looking in: EPA’s Technical Experts Were Largely Shut out
by Matthew Choi (Politico’s Morning Energy) EPA’s technical experts were largely shut out of the rulemaking process when the Trump administration rolled back tailpipe greenhouse gas standards, according to a report by the agency’s internal watchdog. OIG’s review could help the Biden administration in reversing the Trump-era move and bolstering regulations on vehicle emissions.
The report found that a large number of comments on drafts of the SAFE Vehicles rule by EPA experts went unanswered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which worked with EPA on redrafting the rule. NHTSA took the lead on the re-writing at the behest of then-EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt and diverged from previous administrations by taking a less collaborative approach with EPA, the report said.
