European Energy and Mitsui & Co., Ltd. Secure OMV as New Offtaker for Kassø e-Methanol Facility

(European Energy) -- Multi-year agreement with OMV adds another major industrial customer for e-methanol from the Kassø facility in Denmark.

– European Energy and Mitsui & Co., Ltd., through their joint venture Solar Park Kassø (SPK), have signed a multi-year agreement with OMV for the offtake of e-methanol from the Kassø facility.

– The agreement is the fourth publicly announced long-term offtake agreement for e-methanol produced at Kassø.

– The e-methanol supplied to OMV will meet EU requirements for Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO).

Copenhagen, Denmark, 20 August 2026 – European Energy and Mitsui & Co., Ltd. have signed, through their joint venture Solar Park Kassø (SPK), a multi-year offtake agreement with OMV for renewable e-methanol produced at the Kassø e-methanol facility in Aabenraa, Denmark.

The agreement adds one of Europe’s major integrated energy, fuels and chemicals companies to the growing group of industrial companies sourcing e-methanol from Kassø.

The e-methanol supplied under the agreement will be EU-certified as a Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO). The agreement includes requirements for greenhouse gas emissions savings significantly above the minimum threshold for RFNBO compliance, demonstrating Kassø’s ability to supply renewable fuels with a substantially lower carbon footprint than their fossil-based alternatives and in compliance with the newly implemented third European renewable energy directive (RED III) for road transport in several European countries.

With the first delivery of e-methanol to OMV completed, the agreement is already being implemented

This is the fourth publicly announced offtake agreement connected to the Kassø e-methanol facility – following agreements with A.P. Moller – Maersk, the LEGO Group and Novo Nordisk -Which together demonstrate demand for e-methanol across several industries and applications.

The Kassø e-methanol facility was inaugurated in May 2025 and has an annual production capacity of 42,000 tonnes. Located next to the 304 MW Kassø Solar Park, the facility combines renewable electricity with biogenic CO₂ to produce e-methanol.

The facility represents the first commercial-scale e-methanol production of its kind and provides industrial customers with access to a renewable alternative to fossil-based methanol. Its combination of renewable electricity, biogenic CO₂ and industrial-scale production demonstrates how Power-to-X can connect renewable energy production with sectors where direct electrification is difficult.

Solar Park Kassø (SPK) is the joint venture between European Energy (51 per cent) and Mitsui & Co., Ltd. (49 per cent). SPK owns both the 304 MW Kassø Solar Park and the co-located Kassø e-methanol facility. Excerpt from Mitsui: Mitsui & Co., Ltd. ("Mitsui", Head Office: Tokyo, President and CEO: Kenichi Hori) and the renewable energy company European Energy A/S ("EE", Head Office: Søborg, Denmark) are working to expand the customer base and applications for the world's first e-methanol. The e-methanol is produced at a plant that was established by Solar Park Kasso ApS, a subsidiary of a joint venture between Mitsui and EE, and is located in Kassø, Aabenraa Municipality, in southern Denmark.

The initial shipment of e-methanol produced under this project was supplied to Danish shipping giant A.P. Moller - Maersk in May 2025 for use as marine fuel. In the spring of 2026, the project also began to supply e-methanol for use in chemical products to the LEGO group, a leading toy manufacturer, and Novo Nordisk, a global healthcare company. The customer base continues to expand, which includes decisions to supply e-methanol as a Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) to leading European energy firm OMV for use as a land-based transportation fuel.

Mitsui has designated "Global Energy Transformation 2.0" as one of its key strategic initiatives in Medium-term Management Plan 2029, with the aim of expanding the range of low-carbon energy products while building an optimized value chain in line with the external environment and customer needs, both of which are changing rapidly. e-methanol is a low-carbon methanol produced by synthesizing green hydrogen generated using renewable energy-derived electricity with green carbon dioxide (CO₂) derived from biomass. A key advantage of e-methanol is its high compatibility with existing infrastructure, such as methanol distribution networks and storage facilities. This allows it to contribute to decarbonization as a synthetic fuel for the transportation sector, including applications for which it has proved difficult to use green hydrogen alone, such as fuel for land transport and aviation. Demand is expected to expand across Europe, especially Germany, driven by policy frameworks such as the Renewable Energy Directive (RED III). By strengthening its supply capacity for low-carbon methanol, Mitsui will contribute to both the realization of energy transformation and the achievement of a sustainable society. READ MORE
