Brookfield Renewable, Plug Power Partner on Hydropower-Fueled Hydrogen Plant
by Elizabeth Ingram (Hydro Review) Plug Power Inc. and Brookfield Renewable Partners L.P. announced plans to build a green hydrogen production plant, which would use 100% renewable energy from Brookfield Renewable’s 252-MW Holtwood hydroelectric facility.
Green hydrogen from this facility will support decarbonization of the transportation and logistics industries in the Northeast and the mid-Atlantic. The plant will be located along the Susquehanna River in south-central Pennsylvania, U.S., and is expected to be online by late 2022, with construction slated to begin by in the first quarter of 2022.
Once operational, the plant is projected to produce about 15 metric-tons of liquid hydrogen per day. It is also expected to create more than 25 green energy jobs in Pennsylvania.

Green hydrogen is an essential component of a zero-carbon economy and critical to the decarbonization of transportation and logistics sectors as well as hard-to-abate industrial applications like steelmaking. A McKinsey study estimated that by 2030, the U.S. hydrogen economy could support 700,000 jobs.
Plug Power also recently announced the construction of a green hydrogen production facility and electric substation in the Western New York Science, Technology and Advanced Manufacturing Park, joining the company’s existing plant in Tennessee. READ MORE

Plug Power to invest $290 million in New York hydrogen fuel production facility (Hydro Review)
Excerpt from Hydro Review: The Plug Power expansion is part of a strategy to construct up to seven hydrogen production facilities across North America by 2022. In January, the Governor announced that Plug Power will be establishing a $125 million Innovation Center in Monroe County, creating 377 new jobs. That facility will manufacture hydrogen fuel cell stacks for its ProGen hydrogen fuel cell engines used to power a variety of electric vehicles, including material handling equipment, on-road commercial fleet vehicles and drones.
“Plug Power’s future rightfully revolves around building the green hydrogen economy,” said Plug Power CEO Andy Marsh. “We are grateful our home state of New York supports aggressive climate and clean energy initiatives. And, that Plug Power’s green hydrogen solutions can make such an impact on positive environmental and economic climates in the state. Many thanks to the leaders of New York State for their continued support.”
