Biofuel Tour Boats Emitting Net Zero CO2 Begin Operating in Tokyo
by Shinji Kurokawa (The Mainachi) A tour boat association in the capital began operating “yakatabune” cruise boats that use biofuel derived from living organisms in the first such initiative in Japan. For the next week or so, the boats will travel from the Asakusabashi district to the Odaiba district down the Sumida River.
The fuel, made from biological resources such as euglena, was developed by Minato Ward-based venture company Euglena Co. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is emitted during operation in the same way as ordinary diesel fuel, but there will be net zero emissions since the living organisms used as raw materials absorb a large amount of CO2 during their growth process.
