South African “TONGAAT” Invests in Ethanol Production in Xinavane
( Intelegencia Empresorial) South African company Tongaat Hulett, the majority shareholder in the Xinavane and Mafambisse sugar factories, in the southern Mozambican provinces of Maputo and central Sofala, respectively, will build an ethanol industry with a capacity of 20 million liters.
To be built in the Xinavane sugar factory, in an area of 3.5 hectares, the raw material for this purpose will be molasses, one of the by-products of the sugar industry.
The construction of the infrastructure will take two years.
According to the corporate director of Tongaat Hullet, Jorge Manjate, the project presents additional opportunities, including the production of CO2 (used in the soft drink industry) and fertilizers (from vinasse).
However, according to “Notícias”, the current production of molasses will not be able to meet the needs of the industry, whose deficit is approximately 17 thousand tons.
Manjate minimized the fact and stated that the molasses deficit will create opportunities for expansion of new Mozambican sugarcane producers by an additional 3,000 hectares and, consequently, the generation of approximately 1,500 jobs. READ MORE
