(Repsol) • Repsol, Toyota Motor Europe, BMW Group and Bosch are launching a pilot project in Spain to demonstrate, under real-world conditions, how current vehicles can run exclusively on 100% renewable gasoline.
- The six-month initiative will feature Toyota and BMW vehicles powered by Repsol's 100% renewable Nexa 95 gasoline and supported by Bosch's digital fuel traceability system.
- The project will provide real-world evidence that renewable fuels can be deployed on a large scale starting today, using existing vehicles, current refueling infrastructure, and digital certification technologies.
Repsol, in collaboration with Toyota Motor Europe (TME), BMW Group, and Bosch, announces the launch in Spain of a pioneering six-month pilot project. The initiative, which began in early July, will demonstrate under real-world conditions the potential of vehicles powered exclusively by renewable fuels.
The project will have a fleet of approximately 20 Toyota and BMW vehicles, powered by Repsol's 100% renewable Nexa 95 gasoline and supported by Bosch's digital fuel traceability technology.
This pilot will provide real-world evidence that vehicles powered exclusively by renewable fuels can be deployed on a large scale, contributing to the decarbonization of mobility in Europe through a complementary and technologically neutral approach that leaves no one behind.
“Technological neutrality is a key pillar of the BMW Group’s strategy. At the same time, our goal is to continue driving ever more efficient vehicles with lower emissions. The BMW and MINI vehicles participating in this pilot project will allow us to gather valuable information to further develop and offer our customers the most efficient and future-proof drive technologies,” said Stefan Heller, Head of Development for the BMW Group’s VEEF Programme.
The pilot project will focus on three main objectives:
- Boosting the availability of renewable gasoline in the market, leveraging Repsol's infrastructure, currently the only company that supplies 100% renewable gasoline at service stations open to the public in Spain.
- Validate traceability and digital certification technologies, using Bosch's Digital Fuel Twin system, which certifies the use of renewable fuels throughout their entire life cycle.
- Demonstrate the operational deployment of vehicle fleets that run exclusively on renewable fuels, highlighting that current vehicles can run on 100% renewable fuels by leveraging existing infrastructure.
Bosch's system will collect and validate refueling data from multiple sources, including vehicle data, service stations, and fuel card transactions, to ensure robust and transparent traceability of renewable fuel use.
“With our Digital Fuel Twin system, Bosch is bringing complete digital transparency to the entire fuel value chain, enabling reliable tracking and verification of renewable fuels from the moment they enter the market until they are used by the end consumer. By accurately monitoring the fuel consumption of each vehicle in real time, we are laying the foundation of trust and regulatory compliance needed to drive greater acceptance of renewable fuels in the mobility and transport sectors,” said Dr. Marko Babic, Head of Product Area and Bosch Digital Fuel Twin System.
A scalable solution that leverages existing vehicles and infrastructure
Unlike other solutions that require new vehicle technologies or infrastructure investments, this pilot project uses Toyota and Lexus vehicles provided by Toyota Spain (TES) and vehicles from the BMW fleet, demonstrating that renewable fuels can contribute to the decarbonization of road transport from today by taking advantage of current vehicles and infrastructure.
Repsol's Nexa 95 100% renewable gasoline is produced from raw materials that meet the requirements of the European Renewable Energy Directive (RED), which allows for a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional fuels, while maintaining full compatibility with gasoline engines and existing infrastructure.
Spain has been selected as the ideal location for this project thanks to the availability of 100% renewable gasoline, the collaboration between the participating partners and the operational support of Toyota Spain.
“At Repsol, we believe that all emissions reduction solutions have a role to play in decarbonizing transport. This project demonstrates how renewable fuels can expand consumer options, offering them an alternative to reduce their carbon footprint by leveraging existing vehicles and infrastructure. As the only company currently supplying 100% renewable gasoline at public service stations in Spain, Repsol is contributing its expertise and infrastructure alongside Toyota, BMW, and Bosch. The data obtained under real-world conditions will highlight the value of a technology-neutral approach to advancing the transition to more sustainable mobility in Europe,” said Estíbaliz Pombo, Deputy Director of Energy Products at Repsol.
Promote the debate on technological neutrality in Europe
The pilot project will generate solid data and conclusions that will contribute to the European debate on the decarbonization of the automotive sector.
In a context where European Union policies are mainly focused on electrification, the initiative aims to demonstrate that renewable fuels can play a complementary and scalable role in reducing CO₂ emissions.
The preliminary data and results obtained during the development of the project will be shared with European Union policymakers, industry representatives and the media to contribute to the debate on technological neutrality and the possible inclusion of vehicles that run exclusively on renewable fuels in future regulatory frameworks.

In that scenario, renewable fuels can help close the gap to achieve climate neutrality, especially when combined with hybrid and plug-in hybrid technologies. This pilot project aims to demonstrate how renewable fuels can make a significant and sustainable contribution to decarbonization starting today, in both new and existing vehicles,” said Pascal Ruch, Vice President of Corporate and Government Affairs at Toyota Motor Europe.
Generate a tangible impact
One of the key factors for the success of the project will be to promote the effective use of renewable fuel in the fleet, contributing to the reduction of emissions and reinforcing the demonstrative value of this solution.
In addition, the pilot will provide relevant information to validate research and development methodologies, analyze the scalability of current refueling tracking systems, and assess the ability of operators to associate fuel consumption with each vehicle individually. READ MORE

In 2025, across the entire supply chain, the average CO2-equivalent emissions reduction of Enilive HVO was 79.5 percent compared to the reference fossil mix.
BMW Group recently started its demonstration of using 100 percent HVO in its diesel fleets.
Refueling data from vehicles is being compared with data from the fleet operators’ payment system to seamlessly trace the fuel used by each vehicle.
This allows a complete and transparent traceability of the fuel the vehicle has used.
The BMW corporate fleets involved in the initiative use pure HVO while traveling across Italy, Germany and Austria, countries where a network of about 1,700 Enilive stations provides HVOlution.
To raise awareness about biofuels, BMW Italia is providing an Enilive HVOlution voucher to all customers of new BMW diesel vehicles in Italy.
“We are very happy to collaborate with Eni in our test and demo fleet,” said Martin Kaufmann, the senior vice president of powertrain development at BMW Group. “In this case this has more than one benefit. Eni is using BMW vehicles in their corporate fleet, at the same time is Enilive a major force in pushing renewable fuels in Europe. With HVOlution, Enilive has a very good product available delivering CO2e-emissions reduction every day.”
With more than 250 million existing vehicles in Europe, the CO2e footprint can be improved if the proportion of renewable fuels is increased.
This further underlines BMW Group’s commitment to enabling immediate and practical emissions-reduction measures already available today.
“The development of our cooperation with BMW Group and BMW Italia marks another significant step toward the decarbonization of road transport and represents a tangible example of integrated partnership between the automotive and energy industries,” said Enilive CEO Stefano Ballista. “Enilive biorefineries in Venice and Gela process mainly waste and residues, such as used cooking oil and animal fats, to produce HVO biofuels, that can be used in all validated diesel engines. As a drop-in fuel, pure HVO does not require engines or distribution infrastructure modifications, making it a readily available and effective solution to accelerate the decarbonization of transport today.” READ MORE
