Penn State Offers New Online Bioenergy Course: ABE 884 – Bioenergy Systems

This fall semester, Penn State World Campus is offering the following online graduate course: ABE 884 – Bioenergy Systems
You are invited to register now for this advanced course in bioenergy principles and applications.
The course examines the theories and applied technologies used in the production and conversion of biomass into transportation fuels, heat, power, electricity, chemicals, and other value-added products. Production strategies focus on sustainable cropping systems, harvest, storage, and pretreatment for diverse biomass feedstocks. Systems analysis will address environmental impacts, policy, and economics.
Lesson Topics Include:
– Criteria for Energy Security and Sustainability
– Fundamental Concepts of Energy Transformations
– Organic Chemistry of Biomass and Biofuels
– Bioenergetics
– Biorenewable Resource Characteristics and Quantities
– Agricultural and Silvicultural Production; Mid-Semester Exam
– Anaerobic Digestion
– Biodiesel; Heat and Power
– Thermochemical Conversion
– Fermentations; Integrated Biorefinery Design
– Environmental Impacts; Life-Cycle Analysis
– Economics of Biomass Production and Conversion Processes
– Emerging Technologies
Instructor: Professor Tom Richard, Director, Penn State Institutes of Energy and the Environment, and the Penn State Biomass Energy Center.
This 3-credit graduate level course may be taken on its own, or students may apply to pursue a Master’s of Professional Studies in Renewable Energy and Sustainability Systems (RESS).
Additional bioenergy courses will be offered in upcoming semesters:
– FOR 880 Bioenergy Feedstocks
– ABE 885 Bioenergy Harvest and Logistics
– ABE 888 Bioenergy Conversions
Note that ABE 884 is a prerequisite for these three courses.
