Op-ed on Ethanol Badly Missed the Mark
by Cassidy Walter (Iowa Renewable Fuels Association/Iowa City Press-Citizen) … Apparently (Jane) Yoder-Short doesn’t know that the growth of ethanol over the last 30 years was driven by ethanol replacing lead and other nasty octane enhancers in our gasoline. And while someone using tobacco is hurting their health, using ethanol blends reduce cancer-causing tailpipe emissions.
But most importantly, ethanol isn’t stuck in the past. The carbon footprint of the average gallon of corn ethanol has been reduced by 23% over the past decade. New technologies at the farm, plant, and carbon sequestration level will make a typical gallon of corn ethanol carbon negative over the next decade.
We agree that Iowa needs to adapt and innovate to stay economically viable and environmentally friendly. But it is a mistake for Yoder-Short to fail to grasp the incredible advances in corn growing and ethanol production, and to assume there is no chance for continued progress.
Iowans have a lot to celebrate when it comes to our ag and biofuels sectors. We should be proud our state is leading the way in providing the world with affordable food and clean fuel. READ MORE
