Iberian Peninsula’s First BioLNG Production Plant Was Announced
(DAM Group/NGV Journal) SOLOGAS, a subsidiary of the DAM Group, presented the potential of the first biomethane plant in the Iberian Peninsula, located in As Somozas, province of A Coruña. The facility, which will be ready by 2023, will have a daily bio-LNG production capacity of 7,000 kg, allowing the company to supply almost 18,000 tons of bio-LNG to the European market over the next 7 years.
“After the improvements and investments that we are carrying out, we can affirm that the year 2023 will be a turning point for SOLOGAS, since we will convert our As Somozas plant into the first facility in the Iberian Peninsula that will sell bio-LNG and bio-CO2, made from sludge and organic waste,” said Santiago Aguilar Freire, CEO of SOLOGAS, during the conference organized by the Galician Energy Institute on energy recovery from organic waste.
During his intervention, the CEO of SOLOGAS addressed the importance of bio-LNG to achieve the objectives of reducing greenhouse gases (GHG), by taking advantage of its potential in maritime and land transport. “The European Commission highlights the important role that biomethane has in decarbonizing transport in a fast and sustainable way, helping to achieve its climate objectives by 2030 and achieve climate neutrality by 2050,” he pointed out.
In this sense, Aguilar Freire reviewed the milestones of SOLOGAS since its inception in 2015, where it was the first plant in Europe to use biogas for the evaporation of hazardous waste, passing through the start-up of the nutrient recovery plant for the manufacture of fertilizers this year, and which will culminate in 2023 with the first bio-LNG plant in the Iberian Peninsula and that will sell biomethane and bio-CO2.
Finally, he highlighted that in the bio-LNG production process implemented by the subsidiary of the DAM Group, “CO2 will be captured to further reduce the emissions of this biofuel.” READ MORE
