HYPERFUELS LLC Launches Renewable Isobutanol Supply Program for Ethanol-Free Gasoline

(Hyperfuels) New bulk supply gives fuel terminals, marketers, government fleets, marine users, collectors, and small-engine customers a practical oxygenated alternative to ethanol-blended gasoline.

HYPERFUELS LLC today announced that it is supplying renewable isobutanol throughout the United States for use as a gasoline oxygenate and as a high-performance alternative to ethanol in ethanol-free gasoline programs.

HYPERFUELS will deliver renewable isobutanol in bulk by barge, railcar, and truckload, providing gasoline terminals, blenders, distributors, and specialty-fuel marketers with a commercial-scale oxygenate supply option.

Under 40 CFR § 1090.740(a)(4), a party that recertifies BOB with a different oxygenate at an equal or greater volume than the oxygenate specified for the BOB—including isobutanol blended at a level greater than 10 volume percent in place of 10 volume percent ethanol—does not incur sulfur or benzene deficits under Section 1090.740. There is no volume limit on this qualifying isobutanol recertification pathway under Section 1090.740(a)(4).

By contrast, E0 remains subject to the one-million-gallon-per-compliance-period facility threshold in Section 1090.740(a)(3), commonly described as approximately 83,000 gallons per month. A terminal recertifying BOB to contain no oxygenate may incur sulfur and benzene deficits; the regulation provides limited relief from obtaining credits for facilities recertifying one million gallons or less, while retaining registration and reporting obligations.

“HYPERFUELS gives gasoline terminals an ethanol-free alternative without an E0 volume ceiling,” said Jess Hewitt, president HYPERFUELS. “By using renewable isobutanol at an equal or greater oxygenate volume than the ethanol specified for the BOB, qualified customers can access a no-limit pathway under Section 1090.740(a)(4), with no sulfur or benzene deficits under that section.”

This creates an opportunity for terminals to move beyond the commercial and regulatory constraints associated with an E0-only approach while supplying gasoline that is ethanol-free. HYPERFUELS will work with each customer to evaluate blend specifications, oxygen content, vapor-pressure performance, product compatibility, labeling, recordkeeping, and all applicable federal, state, and local requirements.

Renewable isobutanol is produced within the broader ethanol-production value chain, creating an additional market pathway for ethanol-industry feedstocks and fermentation-derived production streams. HYPERFUELS views the product as an expansion of renewable alcohol markets—not a rejection of the ethanol industry—and as a way to provide fuel suppliers with another renewable blending component.

HYPERFUELS can supply renewable isobutanol, synthetic isobutanol, or customized combinations of renewable and synthetic material. This flexible supply model allows customers to address application-specific performance needs and structure blends around applicable lifecycle-carbon-intensity, renewable-content, procurement, or other program requirements.
