HVO Biodiesel from Colabitoil Makes the Alpine World Cup Roll
(Via TT (Google Translation)) During the Alpine World Championships in Åre, all pistols and buses run on fossil-free fuel HVO. A large part of the buildings that are set up temporarily for the Alpine World Cup will be heated by the biodiesel. Even the SJ’s mini train that operates the village under the World Cup goes green. Year 2019 hopes that cooperation with the HVO supplier Colabitoil will increase awareness of HVO around Europe.
To the Alpine World Championships in Åre in February, most athletes, teams around, TV companies and other media will have to travel to the event, which means carbon dioxide emissions from flights and cars. To this comes the visitors, who are happy to come in thousands from both near and far. Reducing the total carbon footprint is therefore a clear focus in the sustainability work at Åre 2019.
Colabitoil Sweden AB is Åre 2019’s official supplier of biodiesel HVO, Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil. Colabitoil is thus one of Åre 2019’s most important partners when it comes to reducing fossil emissions during the event. Through a detailed analysis of all energy and fuel needs, the organization behind the Alpine World Cup has chosen renewable alternatives wherever possible without compromising on the safety and functionality of the championships. This work has been extensive and with few exceptions, such as for safety reasons for rescue helicopters.
Among other things, the company provides Åre 2019 and various service teams with renewable fuel and ensures that partners and suppliers also have access to HVO.
– We will set up two extra service stations in Åre during the Alpine World Cup 2019. Visitors who come to Åre from both directions, Östersund and Trondheim, will easily be able to fill in with HVO during their stay in Åre, says Daniel Arenholm, Head of Communication and investment relations at Colabitoil.
The piste machines that are already preparing the ski runs run at HVO. Visitors to the event will be able to travel by buses driven by HVO from the large visitor parking spaces outside Åre and a ring line in Åre. HVO also provides heating and electricity to a number of temporary buildings under the Alpine World Cup, totaling more than 3000 square meters, which includes, among other things, a volunteer center, festival tent, media center and food court. In Åre town, SJ’s festival train will roll between the World Cup arena and the railway station with the green fuel in the abdomen.
– Unlike Northern Europe, HVO is not particularly well known in Central Europe. Year 2019’s collaboration with Colabitoil will increase awareness of HVO as an alternative to fossil diesel in the ski world. It is important because the ski law is known for its large carbon footprint which is far larger than a regular European. Also, the rental cars from our partner Europcar as the ski teams will run under the Alpine VM are fueled with HVO, says Niklas Carlsson, CEO of Åre 2019.
What is HVO Biodiesel?
HVO stands for Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil, or hydrogenated vegetable oil. It is a renewable and fossil-free diesel produced by hydrogenation and is also known as “green diesel”. HVO is known in the Nordic countries as a diesel that does not require any measures regarding the mechanics of diesel engines. Other benefits include lower emissions, cleaner and more efficient fuel combustion, and improved cooling and storage properties. Its special properties make it capable of being stored and used in very cold temperatures, down to minus 30 degrees.
HVO is free of aromatics and sulfur and is more combustion-efficient than fossil diesel. It is a so-called “drop-in fuel” which means that it is chemically equivalent to fossil diesel. Therefore, no sandwiches or fuel stations need to be rebuilt and it can be used in ordinary diesel engines without rebuilding requirements. HVO can be produced from many different types of vegetable oils and fats such as rapeseed oil and soybean oil.
HVO100 is not just one to 100 percent green fuel. Norrlandska Colabitoil conducts cutting-edge research in the field of energy and the environment. By recycling waste products in the form of vegetable oils from, among other things, the forest industry, Colabitoil also takes advantage of energy that would otherwise have been wasted and helps to convert to a circular economy.
