Griffith Trash Pact 60 Percent Higher than Ethanol Plant Fee
by Diane Krieger Spivak (Post-Tribune) If the town approves any of three recently opened trash hauling bids, residents here would likely pay 60 percent more to have their trash taken to a landfill than to a proposed garbage-to-ethanol plant.
Town officials, who said they would not sign on to a county-wide contract to haul municipal solid waste to the planned $254 million plant slated to be built in Schneider, opened bids last week for trash disposal.
Of the three bids received, Republic Waste bid $13 a month per household, Total Disposal of Gary bid $14.57 and Waste Management of Indiana bid $14.88 for trash, recycling and yard waste.
By contrast, Powers Energy of America’s contract with the Lake County Solid Waste Management District would cost households $4 a month, based on per-ton volume cost, Solid Waste chief Jeff Langbehn said Friday. READ MORE
