(Deming Headlight)  Like other high school seniors, Sophia Sánchez-Maes of Mayfield High is weighing her options as she considers where she will go next. … Sánchez-Maes was a photonics research intern at the University of New Mexico’s Center for High Technology Materials in Albuquerque in the summer between her sophomore and junior years when she began working on converting algae to biofuels. Working with teammates Ian Rankin and Ahmed Muhyi her junior year, they created thousands of simulations looking for the optimal way to produce algae. She continued the research with NMSU to first find the ideal algae to be used for fuel, settling on an algae native to Yellowstone National Park. Then to pioneer a chemical method called hydrothermal liquefaction to process the algae for fuel more efficiently. READ MORE
