Biogenic CO2 and Anaerobic Digestion: Secure Supplies, Carbon Neutral, Market Ready

(Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association) Last November, the UK Government paid ‘tens of millions of pounds’ to keep the UK arm of US company CF Industries (CFI) producing CO2 for the food and chemical sectors. They said it was a one off. However, in February the government entered a second deal with CFI. Again, they have refused to say exactly how much it has cost to keep the supply of this strategically important gas flowing.

CO2 is a by-product of mineral fertiliser production – a process which is energy intensive. Globally, the production of mineral fertiliser consumes 1-3% of all energy generated. When energy prices are too high, companies like CFI shut down ‘for maintenance’. In response to previous temporary CO2 supply shortages in 2021, the government has advised industry to diversify supply and develop further resilience against the risk of further potential shocks to the market. Anaerobic digestion (AD) generates a secure supply, together with other products such as biogas and a biofertilizer. Additionally, AD’s CO2 is biogenic, therefore contributing to decarbonise all CO2 users.
