Alternative Fuel Programs May Not Be Legal
by Stephanie Schwartz (NorthJersey.com) There is a dispute between the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and Pascack Valley towns over the supposed biodiesel program Westwood and Woodcliff Lake have implemented.
Melinda Dower of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Bureau of Mobile Sources alleges that what the boroughs are doing does not comply with federal law, that the DEP has not registered used vegetable oil as a safe motor vehicle fuel.
Both Westwood and Woodcliff Lake call what they do a “biodiesel blend,” which takes used vegetable oil from nearby restaurants and spins it through Westwood’s centrifuge, where particulates are removed from the oil and the oil is cleaned. This oil is then mixed with regular diesel oil in borough DPW trucks.
