UNICA Slams EU Industry for False Subsidy Claims

by Meghan Sapp (Biofuels Digest)  In Belgium, UNICA is hitting back at ePure and the European sugar industry for wild, invalidated claims of $1.8 billion in subsidies to its sugarcane sector and cross-subsidization of its ethanol industry. In a letter sent to the European institutions, the four associations who have launched the campaign and to the press, UNICA accepts $803,196 worth of low interest loans to the industry that could be viewed as support, but it’s a far cry from the figures the Europeans are using in an attempt to keep Brazil from securing more sugar and ethanol import quotas though EU-Mercosur trade negotiations. Nor does it accept that it cross-subsidizes ethanol production due to the sheer fact that ethanol production is loss-making for mills due to high global sugar prices.  READ MORE
