Dynaflow Announces DOE Small Business Innovation Grant for Cavitation-Based Algae Harvest, Oil Extract System

Dynaflow, Inc.®, a leader in R&D services and products in fluid dynamics and applied sciences, today announced that it has been awarded a Department of Energy (DOE) Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract to develop and demonstrate a new system to extract oil from algae.

The program objective is to contribute to the development and commercialization of cost competitive algae based biofuels that can serve as alternatives to petroleum based fuels. Algae has advantages as a biofuel stock compared to soy, corn, and palm in that it has a higher oil yield per acre and can be grown on otherwise nonproductive land. Traditional methods of utilizing algae for biofuels, however, are limited by costs of harvesting the algae and extracting the oil, and the challenges of scaling mass production systems.

Dynaflow’s new system utilizes a low-cost, sustainable method that combines the algae harvesting and oil extraction steps. The approach promises greater energy efficiency and scalability than traditional methods for producing biofuels from algae and provides a path to large cost-effective algae based biofuel production.

Dynaflow senior research scientist, Dr. Greg Loraine said “We are applying new technology to an old idea. Combining harvesting and extraction in one step will make algae based fuels more cost competitive with petroleum sources.”

The contract builds upon Dynaflow’s R&D and commercialization efforts, including work for EPA, ONR, and NASA in the fields of energy efficiency and environmental remediation. The new system will include the Dynaflow proprietary DynaJets® cavitating jet technologies which have been utilized in applications as diverse as the disinfection of microorganisms, chemical remediation, and industrial cutting and cleaning.  READ MORE
