Vantage Point: Views on Food, Fuel and Land Use May 24, 2011 Webinar

It wasn’t long ago that the World Bank debunked the report that claimed biofuels cause food prices to increase. Still, the issue is resurfacing, as can be seen in a flury of recent news reports. Food prices are climbing, but experts agree the single biggest factor is high petroleum prices. A confluence of other factors can also contribute to rising food prices and world hunger. Is biodiesel really one of them?

Dr. Stephen Kaffka – University of California, Davis
Dr. Kaffka is with the U.C. Davis Department of Plant Sciences and is Director of the California Biomass Collaborative. He holds a Ph.D in Agronomy from Cornell University.
Keith Kline – Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Kline is with the Global Change and Developing Countries Programs department of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He researches challenges faced by developing countries related to human needs, energy and environment , and how to optimize foreign assistance and policy related to biodiversity, climate change and “sustainable” development. He holds degrees from the University of Michigan School of Natural Resources and Framingham State College, Massachusetts.
Moderator: Moderator: Don Scott – National Biodiesel Board
Scott serves as Director of Sustainability for the National Biodiesel Board. His program areas build science and awareness to ensure that biodiesel production meets today’s needs without compromising future generations’ ability to meet these needs for themselves. Don is a licensed Professional Engineer with a civil engineering degree from the University of Missouri–Columbia. Prior to joining NBB, Don was an Environmental Engineer for the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.
