UFOP Misses Recognition of Bioenergy as an Essential Contribution to Climate Protection
(Union for the Promotion of Oil and Protein Plants (UFOP)) … The UFOP therefore appeals to Federal Minister Habeck – also because of his government experience as the former Minister of Agriculture of Schleswig-Holstein – to evaluate the biomass production on the fields with regard to the regulatory requirements for the cultivation of raw materials that have to be observed today. Deficits in international competition exist here if innovations such as new breeding methods cannot be applied or progress is not promoted in the same way as the conversion of the heating and transport sectors to electricity as an energy source.
The UFOP recalls the pioneering role of biofuels with regard to the legally anchored sustainability certification, which will be expanded and tightened from 2022. The reference in the opening balance to the competition for material use is therefore not comprehensible. Even with the producer prices for rapeseed and grain at historic lows, there was no demand from the material sector. The previous bioeconomy strategy thus left agriculture untouched. The industry is geared towards the world market. You will look in vain for legally required proof of sustainability or documentation in a database – as is the case with biofuels and deliveries from third countries.
On the occasion of the opening balance, UFOP appealed to Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection Habeck to also seek dialogue with agriculture and forestry with the aim of working closely together to improve the climate balance as quickly and visibly as possible. Agriculture has a direct interest in this, because this sector in particular is directly affected by climate change and farms naturally cannot “pull away” from these problems. READ MORE
