Trash Plant Plan Moves Forward
by Gerry Tuoti (Tauton Daily Gazette) Mayor Charles Crowley is enthused by the feedback he’s received from the state about Taunton’s plans to create a new trash processing facility that will use trash to produce ethanol and other industrial materials.
… “Over the past several weeks, MassDEP has reviewed the information you have provided to date to determine if the proposed facility would be consistent with the Solid Waste Plan in respect to the moratorium on new capacity for the combustion of mixed municipal solid waste,” the letter states. “Based on our review of the information provided, it appears that this project would not entail combustion of MSW and would be consistent with the moratorium.”
With its municipal landfill nearing capacity, Taunton has spent the past several years searching for a solution to its long-term trash disposal needs. The city plans to enter a partnership with a private firm to establish an ethanol production facility that will also address its trash disposal needs and incorporate increased recycling. READ MORE
