Nitin Gadkari: Use Biofuel for Public Transport
(Times of India) Referring to country’s high fuel import bill and rising oil prices, Union minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari said that Uttar Pradesh, being the largest producer of sugarcane and having a huge potential for manufacturing ethanol, should run all its public transport on biofuel.

Blaming the burning of rice straw in Punjab, Haryana and UP for Delhi’s air pollution, Gadkari said that one tonne of rice straw can manufacture 218 litre of bio-ethanol. “We have the technology. Instead of burning this straw which leads to pollution, UP should simply convert it to bio-ethanol and use it for running its public transport,” he said.
Speaking at the Indian International Science Festival in Lucknow … 180 biodigesters were functional along the Ganga to clean the water being discharged in the river. These biodigesters produce methane which could be converted to bio-CNG and used to power at least 10,000 buses in UP. READ MORE
