Leahy among Lawmakers Taking Farm Bill to Conference
(WCAX) Both houses of Congress have passed their respective versions of the Farm Bill, a massive piece of legislation that affects farmers around the country.
Now, a bipartisan group of lawmakers, including Vermont Sen. Patrick Leahy, will try to come together to pass one version of the bill.
Farm bill negotiations are deeply rooted in politics. Leahy is one of four Democratic senators involved in the process.
North Dakota will have two representatives in the bipartisan conference: Democratic Senator Heidi Heitkamp and Republican Representative Kevin Cramer, who are also facing off in one of the year’s most hotly contested Senate races. Political scientists say it’s no surprise the two Dakotans were chosen for the committee. The leaders of their respective parties want to give Heitkamp and Cramer loud voices in the national agriculture conversation. READ MORE
