In 2018, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 19867-1 “Harmonized laboratory test protocols” were released to establish improved quality and comparability for data on cookstove air pollutant emissions, efficiency, safety, and durability. This webinar will explore recent efforts to disseminate the new standard internationally, updates related to current standards development efforts, and an overview of ISO protocol testing results and related research.

Jim Jetter
Environmental Engineer @US EPA – Air and Energy Management Division
Jim Jetter conducts household energy research at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency laboratory located in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, and he is Convenor for ISO (International Organization for Standardization) TC (Technical Committee) 285, Working Group 2, Laboratory Testing of Cookstoves. Jim is a licensed professional engineer with degrees in mechanical and environmental engineering, and he has worked in the cookstove sector for many years.
Wyatt Champion
Combustion Research Engineer @Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) Fellowship
Wyatt earned his Ph.D. from the University of Colorado Boulder where he assessed health and environmental issues of home heating with wood and coal on the Navajo Nation. He has since conducted field and lab testing of cookstoves through postdocs at NC State University and the US EPA, as well as assessed lead exposures and sustainable development through a postdoc at the University of South Florida. He now conducts combustion research at the US EPA as a contractor, and spends his free time sailing, playing tennis, and walking his hound dog.
John Mitchell
John Mitchell works at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency where he coordinates the Agency’s cookstove activities to rapidly increase the use of affordable, reliable, clean, efficient, and safe home cooking and heating practices. For 10 years he coordinated the Partnership for Clean Indoor Air (PCIA) which was launched at the World Summit for Sustainable Development in 2002, and integrated with the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves at the RIO +20 in 2012. Prior to working on cookstoves at EPA, he worked at the Maryland Department of the Environment coordinating Maryland’s international environmental initiatives and worked on a wide range of environmental issues, including: Smart Growth, air and water quality, waste management, as well as Chesapeake Bay protection and restoration.
Elisa Derby
Senior Director of Research, Evidence and Learning @Clean Cooking Alliance
Elisa Derby is the Senior Director of Research, Evidence and Learning for the Clean Cooking Alliance. She leads CCA’s work building capacity and facilitating collaboration between diverse technical experts and policymakers to translate local needs and scientific expertise into publicly accessible information and action, including leading CCA’s Standards and Testing portfolio. Elisa has 20 years of clean cooking sector expertise as an experienced project and program manager and technical facilitator. Prior to joining CCA she led Winrock International’s 15-year household energy and clean cooking portfolio, including co-coordinating CCA’s precursor Partnership for Clean Indoor Air from 2003 through the establishment of CCA. She has been an active technical expert member of ISO Technical Committee 285 (Clean Cookstoves and Clean Cooking Solutions) since its inception, and has led or supported multiple research projects investigating consumer adoption of cooking technologies and practices and resulting impacts. She holds a Master’s degree from UC Berkeley’s Energy and Resources group. READ MORE
