Don’t Turn the Clock Back on Building Better Fuels: ABFA Letter to Senate Committee
(Advanced Biofuels Association) The Advanced Biofuels Association (ABFA) today sent the following letter to U.S. Senator Jeff Bingaman (D-NM), Chairman Energy and Natural Resources Committee, and U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Ranking Member, opposing any efforts to repeal Section 526 of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, which prohibits Federal Agencies from contracting for fuels that pollute more than conventional petroleum.
The Honorable Jeff Bingaman
Chairman Energy and Natural Resources Committee
United States Senate
Washington, DC 20510
The Honorable Lisa Murkowski
Ranking Member Energy and Natural Resources Committee
United States Senate Washington, DC 20510
The Advanced Biofuels Association opposes any efforts to repeal Section 526 of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, which prohibits Federal Agencies from contracting for fuels that pollute more than conventional petroleum.
Repealing Section 526 will be detrimental to stated national security goals to decrease America’s reliance on foreign oil and lower carbon emissions. Recently the Department of Defense indicated its opposition to the repeal of this provision, stating that it is capable of meeting its fuel demands under current law, and that Section 526 is essential in spurring the development of renewable and domestically produced drop-in fuels. We agree with their assertion.
Our member companies are working hard to commercialize a wide array of advanced and cellulosic biofuel technologies to accomplish these goals, and any repeal would send a negative signal to industry, which could result in adverse impacts to U.S. job creation, economic development, and competitiveness.
Therefore, we urge the Committee and its members not to undermine Section 526 by repealing or amending this provision.
Thank you for your consideration of this request. We stand ready to answer any questions you may have on this important issue.
Best Regards,
Michael J. McAdams
