China Continues down Path to Use Cassava for Bioethanol Production
(Renewable Energy Magazine) Albeit it hazy, news regularly filters out of China about the progress this country is making in using cassava as a raw material for producing bioethanol. The latest is that the Chinese have completed mapping the genome sequence of this plant, which they can now use to develop more hardy varieties that can be grown in cooler and drier areas of the country.
Although it was announced in 2006 that China was to commence production of bioethanol using cassava and yucca, it was not until last year that China started building the first plant, located in the province of Guanhxi which is the leading producer (more than 60%) of this tuber; used to date in the production of starch and alcohol. Nevertheless, the Chinese remain committed to cassava as a raw material for bioethanol production, and researchers have just completed mapping its genome sequence; a necessary step in expanding cultivation of this crop.
