Biofuel Crops Will Not Increase Food Prices, Shortages
by Samihah Zaman (Gulfnews) More production aids development
There is currently no need to worry that increasing biofuel crops for transport purposes will create food shortages and food price rises in the world, a panel in the capital heard yesterday.
Instead, reducing a dependency on oil for agricultural processes and improving the biofuel production sector can aid development in less developed economies with large agriculture sectors, panellists said on the third day of the World Future Energy Summit 2011.
At present, biofuels are one of the most viable alternatives to fossil fuels in the transportation sector, Dr Arnaldo Walter, a professor at the State University of Campinas in Brazil, told Gulf News.
“This is because the alternative of electric cars is still very expensive, and requires a major change from current vehicular technology,” Dr Walter said.
…”Making use of this land while ensuring less food wastage, as well as increasing the yield from each unit of biofuel, will prevent food-fuel competition for some time to come,” Dr Walter said. READ MORE
