BGK Invested EUR 25 Million in a Pan-European Biomethane Fund

(Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego) Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego (BGK) has invested €25 million in the SWEN Impact Fund for Transition 3 (SWIFT 3), managed by the French company SWEN Capital Partners. The money will be used to develop biogas and biomethane projects, including in Poland, which will strengthen the country's energy independence.

SWIFT 3 is a specialized infrastructure fund focused on decarbonizing sectors of the economy where emissions are difficult to reduce, such as the gas sector. The fund aims to build biogas and biomethane installations in Europe and other OECD countries, based on the latest technological solutions. SWIFT 3 is the third vehicle in a continuing investment strategy launched by SWEN in 2019.

The BGK investment totaled €25 million. The funds can be used to support projects that respond to the growing demand for local, sustainable energy sources. Thanks to the investment, biomethane projects capable of producing nearly 20 million cubic meters of biomethane annually will be implemented.

In addition to BGK, the fund's investors include more than a dozen renowned financial institutions, including the European Investment Fund (EIF) and the leading Spanish development institution, COFIDES.

Poland needs affordable and accessible energy. The energy transition is one of the greatest challenges facing the Polish economy. Thanks to the availability of appropriate raw materials, our country has enormous potential for biogas and biomethane production – among the highest in Europe. Despite this, in 2025, only about 400 biogas plants and just one biomethane plant were operational in Poland. It's safe to say that low-emission energy is slipping through our fingers. That's why I'm pleased that, as the Polish development bank, we have allocated €25 million to support the biogas and biomethane market in Poland. Thanks to investments like these, we can increase the use of domestic energy sources.

Biomethane is a low-emission energy source that, as a renewable substitute for natural gas, plays a key role in the National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP). Biomethane increases the diversification of energy sources and supports the stability of the entire energy system. The biomethane sector is also one of the best examples of practical implementation of the circular economy, combining energy production with waste management and the production of natural fertilizers.

Thanks to investments like this, our economy benefits twofold. First, we bring to Poland capital, technology, and best practices in investment management, as well as the know-how necessary to create and run biomethane projects. Second, we strengthen circular energy, thereby protecting the environment and simultaneously increasing the profitability of agriculture.

Biomethane is seen in the European Union as an alternative to Russian gas, which could, to some extent, improve European energy security. Poland has the potential to become a key partner in achieving the ambitious goal of the REPowerEU initiative, which includes the production of 35 billion cubic meters of biomethane annually. BGK Strategy

The investment in SWEN SWIFT 3 is consistent with BGK's 2035-2030 strategy, which aims to significantly increase the scale of capital investments at BGK. Over the next three years, the bank intends to increase its direct capital investment, including in infrastructure funds and top managers, which will translate into supporting the development and competitiveness of the Polish economy. To date, BGK has invested €25 million in the Eiffel Transition Infrastructure Fund, which operates in the field of renewable energy infrastructure, and €20 million in Future Energy Ventures, which supports the energy transition in Poland.
