Charles D. Scott Award
About the Award:
Initiated in 1995, the Charles D. Scott Award recognizes individuals who have made distinguished contributions to enable and further the use of biotechnology to produce fuels and chemicals.
The recipient of the Charles D. Scott Award will receive a plaque and gratis registration for three successive annual meetings of the Symposium.
About Charles D. Scott:
The award is named in honor of Dr. Charles D. Scott, who founded the Symposium on Biotechnology for Fuels and Chemicals and chaired the conference for its first ten years. A member of the National Academy of Engineering and a past director of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Chuck performed research and development on many novel bioprocessing systems while at ORNL including high productivity bioreactors, immobilized microbes, enzymes in organic media, and coal bioprocessing.
Who Is Eligible:
The nominees must have made one or more outstanding research contributions in biotechnology for the production of fuels and chemicals. These contributions should be of exceptional merit, reflecting independence of thought and originality that adds appreciably to scientific knowledge. Activities such as journal editing, organizing and chairing conferences, and serving scientific societies in official capacities may be considered when judging research contributions, but the most important factor in selecting nominees is research accomplishments. |

Raphael Katzen Award
About the Award:
Initiated in 2008, the Raphael Katzen Award recognizes individuals who have made distinguished contributions to enable and further the deployment and commercialization of biotechnology to produce fuels and chemicals from renewable resources.
The recipient of the Raphael Katzen Award will receive a plaque and gratis registration for three successive annual meetings of the Symposium.
About:
This award is named in honor of Dr. Raphael Katzen, who was a pioneer in scaling up and commercializing technologies for converting renewable feedstocks into fuels and chemicals. Dr. Katzen was involved in this topic since the 1940s when he first began working on converting wood waste to ethanol. He played a major role in development and improving corn dry milling technologies and in continuing to advance commercialization of lignocellulose conversion technologies.
Who Is Eligible:
The nominees must have made a substantial contribution to the development of commercial biotechnology for the production of fuels and chemicals from renewable resources. These contributions should be of exceptional merit, reflecting significant advancements in technology or commercial practices leading toward implementation. Activities such as fundamental research, publications, journal editing, organizing and chairing conferences, and serving scientific societies in official capacities may be considered but the most important factor in selecting nominees is commercialization. |

Bioeconomy Leadership Award
About the Award:
The “Bioeconomy Leadership Award”, created in 2013 is given on behalf of the SBFC community to a company or non-governmental organization that has significantly advanced the development of a renewable resource-based fuels and chemicals economy.
This award is intended to recognize demonstrated and sustained leadership excellence in enabling and realizing commercialization of biomass conversion technologies for fuels and chemicals production.
Unique among the SBFC awards, the Bioeconomy Leadership Award is presented to a company or institution rather than to an individual. This new award has been conceived to showcase organizational leadership in advancing development of the biobased economy.
The Bioeconomy Leadership Award includes a plaque and promotion in the Symposium on Biotechnology for Fuels and Chemicals’ program book and web online program, as well as a feature story in the Society for Industrial Microbiology and Biotechnology’s flagship publication SIMB News.
Who Is Eligible:
The successfully nominated company or organization will have made substantial contributions to furthering commercialization of commodity fuels and chemicals production from renewable resources using biologically-based approaches.
