Assessing the life cycle carbon intensity of hydrogen production - November 15, 2022
GTI Energy has developed a simple-to-use educational tool to advance productive and informed conversations regarding the role of hydrogen in energy transitions.
The Hydrogen Production Emissions Calculator (HyPEC) allows users to estimate the greenhouse gas emissions associated with various hydrogen production pathways under various user-defined inputs and assumptions. It leverages Argonne National Laboratory’s GREET model, offering credible and rigorous life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology in a publicly-accessible and user-friendly online platform.
The HyPEC tool offers rich insights and helpful information to demystify the life cycle carbon intensity of hydrogen, supporting stakeholders and the broader public in the journey to develop a deeper understanding of the role of hydrogen.

Blending Hydrogen into the Gas Grid: What are the Impacts Behind the Meter? - May 10, 2022
Today several North American utilities are planning to blend hydrogen into their gas distribution networks, both as a strategy to meet decarbonization targets and to stimulate scalable demand for this emerging low-carbon fuel. To understand the impacts of these blending efforts on downstream homes and businesses, GTI’s researchers are currently investigating how hydrogen’s unique properties can impact the equipment served by these networks. This research covers the impacts on existing equipment, both operational performance and safety, and on technology solutions that permit increased acceptance of hydrogen as a fuel.
Sub-Surface Technologies for the Low-Carbon Energy Transition - March 16, 2022
The oil and gas industry has over 100 years of experience working with subsurface reservoirs, has invested trillions of dollars in wells, pipelines, processing plants and other surface infrastructure, and has a workforce highly skilled in the geosciences, reservoir engineering, mechanical and chemical engineering, among other disciplines. This workforce knowledge and skillsets will be critical for the low carbon energy transition, particularly related to CO2 storage, H2 storage, and enhanced geothermal systems. The re-purposing of legacy infrastructure will also be critical in minimizing the investment required for the transition. In this session, learn how existing sub-surface skillsets and infrastructure can be integrated into decarbonization strategies and what new innovations are needed for optimization.
Advancing Transparency in Hydrogen Markets - February 24, 2022
With organizations and governments around the world focused on net-zero commitments, hydrogen continues to be discussed as a solution to decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors. And yet, the carbon intensity of hydrogen is currently hard to measure, without precise measurement tools available on the market. GTI will welcome experts from the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) and S&P Global Platts to discuss the need for better emissions measurement tools in hydrogen marketplaces and what’s needed to address this void.

Introducing Veritas: Collaborating to Measure and Verify Comanies' Methane Emissions Reductions - September 30, 2021
Reducing methane emissions is a this-decade opportunity to slow the rate of global warming, and leading companies and organizations are hard at work on this opportunity. An array of new technologies and solutions are increasingly available, but the market lacks a consistent, credible, verifiable, and transparent methodology for assessing the effectiveness of those technologies and practices in reducing methane emissions. GTI’s newest collaborative initiative, Veritas, convenes diverse stakeholders to develop technical protocols and a widely accepted methodology to quantify methane emissions. These measurements can then be widely used to inform actions that drive emissions reductions.

Revolutionizing Future Power Generation with Transformational sCO2 Technology - September 2021
With an increasing global demand for energy, there’s never been a time when compact, on-demand power generation has been needed more. High-efficiency sCO2-based power cycles produce electricity with lower emissions using smaller turbo-machinery which results in a more cost-effective and efficient system. These new system are highly adaptable to a variety of existing heat sources as well as new solar and wind power renewable resources.

Minimizing Methane Emissions from Natural Gas Systems: What You Measure Matters - July 2021
To maximize the role of natural gas in low-carbon, low-cost energy systems, methane emissions must be measured and minimized. Research has demonstrated a frequent gap between bottom-up emission factor-based inventories and top-down measurements. This mismatch illustrates the need to incorporate measurements into emission inventories.
In this session, Erin will discuss the need to standardize an approach for incorporating measurements into methane emissions inventories. Responsive to this need, GTI is gearing up to launch its initiative that will develop measurement and reconciliation protocols along the natural gas value chain to accelerate such a transition.
