Navassa Ordinance Would Allow Biofuel Production
by Lynda Van Kuren (StarNews Online) The Navassa Town Council recently tabled a decision on a proposed ordinance that would allow biofuel production in its heavy industrial districts and conditional production in its light industrial district.
The council stressed the impact of biofuel production on the town would be minimal and processes or buildings that would endanger or mar the town, such as smokestacks, ultrasonic reactors and industrial-looking manufacturing, would not be allowed. Further, officials said, residents would not experience any negative heat, light or odor from the biofuel production.
A company recently expressed interest in Navassa as a site for biofuel production, which prompted the proposed ordinance. The company would use algae to create methane, a fuel that is the principal component of natural gas. READ MORE
