bp and MIGASA Agree to Supply Non-food Industrial Waste to Produce Biofuels at the Castellón Refinery

(bp) -- bp has signed an agreement with the agri-food group MIGASA for the supply of up to 40,000 tonnes per year of non-food industrial waste from vegetable oil for a decade. -- bp will use the biological feedstock to produce biofuels for road transport –HVO– and for aviation –SAF– at its Castellón refinery, as part of its transformation process into an integrated energy hub.

bp Energy Spain has signed a strategic agreement with the Spanish agri-food group MIGASA for the annual supply of up to 40,000 tonnes of non-food industrial waste from vegetable oil for a decade. bp will use these biological feedstocks together with other fossil feedstocks to co-process renewable fuels at its Castellón refinery, such as HVO for heavy road transport, or SAF for aviation.

Co-processing biological feedstocks in refineries is the most cost-effective way to produce renewable fuels on a large scale and is an important element of bp's strategy.

“Biofuels can play a key role in decarbonising hard-to-electrify sectors such as aviation, shipping and heavy road transport. When used on a large scale, these fuels can help reduce life-cycle emissions in these sectors, which is why we are investing and collaborating with customers and partners such as MIGASA to expand our offering of advanced fuels derived from renewable sources,” said Olvido Moraleda, President of bp Spain.

Antonio J. Gallego, CEO of MIGASA, said: “MIGASA is a family business closely linked to the land and the work of farmers. Our commitment to the social and environmental environment is a key part of the company's roadmap. One of our goals is to contribute to the circular economy by seeking alliances such as this one with bp, which allow us to generate useful raw materials for the energy industry from the waste generated by the different oils we treat. The application of this roadmap has made us the first company in the olive oil sector in Spain to obtain the 'Waste to Resources: Zero to Landfill' seal, which certifies that more than 95% of the waste from our processes is returned to the industry as secondary raw materials.”

This agreement, signed for a period of 10 years with the possibility of extension, is key because it allows bp to ensure the availability of raw materials to produce biofuels. It includes the possibility of identifying new opportunities in the future for the reuse of vegetable oil waste.

Non-food industrial waste will come from the supply chain of the vegetable oil refining industry, so the alliance between bp and MIGASA will also contribute to strengthening the circular economy model of the Spanish agri-food sector. One of the most important subsectors of this industry in Spain is oils and fats, with a sales volume of 16 billion in 2023.

This is therefore a strategic alliance between a global energy company, bp, and one of the most important agri-food companies in Spain, MIGASA, sectors of fundamental importance for the country's economy. This agreement is expected to offer fast-to-implement and economically efficient solutions for the decarbonisation of the transport and aviation sectors.

This is a further step in the planned transformation of bp's Castellón refinery into an integrated energy hub that produces not only conventional fuels but also products derived from renewable sources. The refinery has been co-processing biological feedstock with fossil feedstock since 2016 and was the first refinery in the world to receive CORSIA certification, which accredits it as a producer of SAF, sustainable aviation fuel.
