National Black Farmers Association Scholarship Program Applications Requested DEADLINE: April 28, 2017

FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) Foundation has established a scholarship program to assist African American farmers, their dependent children and other African American students who plan to continue their education in college or vocational school programs.

The program is administered by Scholarship America, the nation's largest designer and manager of scholarship, tuition assistance and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations and individuals. Awards are granted without regard to race, color, creed, religion, sexual orientation, gender, disability or national origin.

100 applications will be accepted.
The application site will close on April 28, 2017, or when 100 applications have been received, whichever occurs first.

Applicants to the National Black Farmers Association Scholarship Program must meet all of the following criteria:

Be African American farmers, or dependent* children of African American farmers, with a verifiable farm operation by the USDA Farm Service Agency or Cooperative Extension Service

*Dependent children are defined as biological, step- or legally adopted children, age 26 and under, living in the farmer's household or primarily supported by the farmer.

Be African American high school seniors or graduates or current postsecondary undergraduates with a demonstrated interest in a farming or agriculture-related career through participation in 4H, FFA or a similar organization.
Plan to enroll in full time undergraduate or graduate agriculture-related study. Field of study will be analyzed case by case for eligibility. Some examples of eligible study include, but not limited to: agricultural business, agricultural economics, agronomy and crop science, animal sciences, equestrian studies, farm and ranch management, food science, horticulture, soil science, sustainable agriculture and agricultural engineering.
Plan to enroll full-time at an accredited two year or four year college, university or vocational-technical school for the entire 2017-2018 academic year.
Have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or its equivalent.

If selected as a recipient, the student will receive an award ranging from $2,500 to $5,000. Awards of $2,500 each will be granted for two-year or vocational-technical study. Awards of $5,000 each will be granted for full-time four-year study.

A minimum of twenty (20) awards will be granted. Awards are not renewable, but students may reapply to the program if they meet eligibility requirements.

“My father taught me very early on that land is the most important tool that a person can possess. And he taught me if I treat the land good the land will take care of me,” said John Boyd, Jr., President of the National Black Farmers Association. “Educating aspiring African-American farmers provides an opportunity to increase and advance agricultural technology, which will be passed on as a vital part of our rich farming legacy to future generations.”

Since 2015, the NBFA Scholarship Program has made 40 scholarships and provided $187,500 in educational support to students participating in a diverse range of agricultural-related studies including: agribusiness, food sciences, biology, holistic nutrition, urban farming, and veterinary science.
