Maryland's Hood College Looks for Biofuels/Bioproducts Scientist/Teacher

(Hood College) Hood College is pleased to announce an exciting new opportunity, funded in part by the Maryland E-Nnovation Initiative Fund (MEIF), administered by the Maryland Department of Commerce and the Hodson Foundation. The Department of Biology is seeking to fill an endowed chair full-time tenure-track faculty position specializing in biofuels/bioproducts research and education (minimum rank of Assistant Professor). The position will begin August 1, 2018.

The Maryland E-Nnovation Initiative Program was created by the Maryland Department of Commerce to "recruit top scholars and teachers who will encourage collaboration among Maryland research universities, federal agencies and the private sector (especially entrepreneurial companies). The combination of top talent and collaboration can enhance the economic competitiveness of the State as it builds on exiting clusters of research and innovation" (www.comerce.maryland.gov).

Hood College seeks a skilled scientist and teacher who will augment a scientifically diverse department and build our program in Advanced Bioproducts Research and Education. The successful candidate will not only be instrumental in building this program, but also their entrepreneurial spirit, innovative mindset, and collaborative approach will play a pivotal role in helping Hood College achieve its strategic goals for the future. These goals are intended to leverage Hood's current strengths, which include rigorous, highly competitive academic programs in the sciences, and a rich network of regional business and government partners who are committed to Hood's growth and success. These goals are also intended to support regional economic development.

Under the general direction of the Biology Department Chair, Hood College's Department of Biology has an endowed chair in biofuels/bioproducts research and education. This is a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor starting August 1, 2018. We seek an individual whose research is connected to biofuels/bioproducts production within the larger context of sustainability issues. Based on their expertise and interests, the successful candidate is expected to teach in the undergraduate and graduate programs, conduct research with undergraduate and graduate students and develop collaborations with local and regional partners to stimulate economic development in the biofuels/bioproducts area. The candidate is also expected to pursue external funding opportunities in partnership with the Office of Institutional Advancement (Grants Officer).

Requirements

Teaching/Facilitation

Teach undergraduate and graduate courses (ENV/BMS) depending on expertise. Metagenomics and synthetic biology are two areas of interest.
Possible opportunity to teach a 200-level or upper-level elective lecture and/or lab in biology.
Course on sustainability such as sustainability and the bioeconomy at both the graduate or undergraduate levels.
Two course releases will be granted per academic year to develop collaborations between Hood and extramural partners and do program development.
Evening or weekend hours could be required to support programs or special events.

Scholarship

Conduct field-specific research to enhance general body of knowledge and provide publication opportunities, or avidly pursue other forms of professional development.
Conduct research with students, as appropriate.
Present research findings and other academic papers at national or professional conferences.
Participate in the communications community.

Service

Support and participate in college committees and/or professional organizations to develop professional partnerships and meet the academic needs of the institution.
Support the College initiatives to recruit and retain talented students.
Participate as an active member of the Hood College community.
Evening or weekend hours could be required to support programs or special events.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

Candidates must possess a Ph.D. in an appropriate biological. Postdoctoral work and teaching experience are preferred. Preferred candidates will have experience in program development and student recruitment, both of which will be important responsibilities of this position. Candidates must also have a well-established, cutting-edge research program in the field of biofuels/bioproducts.
