PANEL 1: Green Job Opportunities

This panel will focus on where green jobs are being created both through employers as well as via creating your own green job by starting a green business.

Darrell Beschen, Senior Advisor/Chief Economist, U.S. Department of Energy. Darrell will focus on the DOE Clean Energy Corps program and how it is hiring 1,000 people. Darrell has been involved in the teams that are interviewing and hiring people.

Patty Simonton, Director of Bethesda Green’s Be Green Business Program. Patty has worked with many start-ups in the green space including a number of Leaders in Energy members who have started their own businesses.

Patty Simonton is the Director of Bethesda Green’s Be Green Business program where she oversees the Innovation Lab, the leading entrepreneurship program in the Mid-Atlantic region that identifies and attracts leaders who are building for-profit business models around innovative and sustainable solutions to tackle environmental and social challenges. Patty brings extensive experience working with startups, social entrepreneurs, and impact investors, and specializes in program management and operations, strategic planning, mentorship, and for-profit business development. Before joining Bethesda Green Patty previously served as the community manager at the Mentor Capital Network, where she recruited and trained mentors to support for-profit social enterprise startups around the globe through the MCN Sustainable Business Plan Collaboration program. She earned her degree in International Business from Georgetown University and an MBA from Johns Hopkins University. She has also earned a Certificate in Entrepreneurship Center Management from the International Business Innovation Association (InBIA).

Loraima Jaramillo-Nieves is a Program Manager supporting IREC’s initiatives in Puerto Rico, such as a workforce needs analysis report, solar and storage demonstration microgrid projects, and the Puerto Rican Solar Business Accelerator. In addition, Loraima is a member of the Advisory Committee of the US Department of Energy PR 100 study.

Dr. Jaramillo also worked at the National Institute of Energy and Island Sustainability. She provided technical assistance to communities on pollution prevention and coordinated the Annual Puerto Rico Energy Situation Report for PR’s Office of Public Energy Policy. Loraima earned a master’s degree in Operations Management and Marketing from the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus. In addition, she earned a magister in Energy Efficiency and Climate Change, and a doctoral degree in Environment and its human and socio-economic dimensions from the Complutense University of Madrid.

Carmen L Bonilla is a job search coach to staff and executives with experience editing and writing thousands of resumes. She is the self-published author of a 70-page booklet entitled “A Workbook for Career Success.” Since March 2020, she has coached over 300 candidates on everything from resume to interview preparation to making a successful transition to a new job. Carmen was attracted to Leaders in Energy because of its Green Jobs/Green Careers program and has been supporting its green jobs programming. READ MORE

Darrell Beschen, Senior Advisor/Chief Economist with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) presented on the 1000+ jobs being filled by the U.S. DOE Energy Clean Energy Corps (CEC). They provide a primer on green job opportunities and funding with links to the CEC and USAJOBS application portals, as well as information on new Federal legislation including the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act.
